Wu Qiong, a renowned actress of Huangmei Opera, has been deeply influenced by the traditional art form since her childhood. Growing up in a small village where people would gather to sing and dance to Huangmei tunes under the starry night sky, Wu found solace in the melodies that seemed to set her spirit free.
In 1970, during a time of great change and upheaval in China, Wu chose not to flee but instead bravely stepped onto the stage of Huangmei Opera. She joined a local troupe and through hard work and dedication quickly rose to fame as an accomplished performer. Her presence on stage exuded an otherworldly charm that left audiences in awe.
Despite opportunities arising for her to leave this rural setting for more urban centers, Wu chose to remain rooted here. This decision was not due to lack of faith but rather out of respect for tradition and responsibility towards it. She vividly recalls when once during a performance at a rural village called Gushan Township in Changsha County's Yuetang Village while she was singing with passion suddenly there was power outage; however instead of stopping she saw people lighting their way with candles below which lit up like stars around her; this moment made her realize what role she had taken upon herself.
As years went by Wu could have retired but instead decided continue serving as mentor guiding young actors sharing techniques with them saying "I cannot let go off Huangmei Opera I cannot leave these ordinary people who smile at me." Thus began another chapter in her life story - one that became etched into history as yet another tale about living life embracing culture forever remembered by those who followed after.
