杨斯盛：近代建筑营造业的一代宗师

杨斯盛简介：

杨斯盛，字锦春，小名阿毛，是上海浦东蔡路青墩人。他的父亲早逝，他在13岁时到上海学习泥水匠技艺。他不仅精通西方近代建筑技术，而且能操英语，认识了许多欧美人，并与英商公平洋行的大班阿摩尔思关系密切。在1880年，他创设了上海近代建筑史上第一家资本主义性质的营造厂——杨瑞泰营造厂。

Yang Sui-sheng's Life and Achievements

Yang Sui-sheng, also known as Jin-chun, was a renowned architect of the late Qing dynasty. Born in 1851 in Shanghai's Pudong district, he lost his parents at a young age and had to work as a laborer to support himself. However, he did not let his difficult circumstances hold him back. Instead, he learned Western architectural techniques and even mastered English.

In 1880, Yang founded the first modern capitalist construction company in Shanghai - Yang Ru-tai Construction Company. He was known for his innovative designs and attention to detail, which earned him recognition from both Chinese and foreign clients.

Despite facing many challenges throughout his life, including imprisonment for supporting educational reformer Huang Yan-pei who was arrested by the Qing government authorities in 1903 for advocating progressive ideas. Yang continued to support education initiatives and philanthropic causes until his death on May 29th, 1908.

His legacy extends beyond architecture; he is remembered as one of China's most generous philanthropists who donated extensively to schools and other charitable organizations during a time when resources were scarce.
