The Origins of Zhong Kui
According to historical records and mythological accounts, Zhong Kui was born during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) in present-day Nanjing. His life began under ordinary circumstances – his mother was an orphaned woman named Liu Xiuwen who married a humble man named Zhang Shouyi. However, fate had other plans for this young boy.
Tragedy struck when Zhong Kui lost his father at a tender age. The loss deeply affected him as he struggled to come to terms with his new reality without parental guidance. Despite this adversity, he continued to demonstrate exceptional intelligence and wisdom beyond his years.
Zhong Kui's Journey
One day while wandering through the forest near their village home with some friends, they stumbled upon an old man practicing martial arts under a tree. The old man noticed their fascination with his skills and offered them lessons on condition that they would help him build a temple dedicated to Guan Yu – one of China's most revered generals.
