Introduction

In the vast ocean of Chinese mythology, there exists a legendary tale that has captured the hearts and imaginations of people for centuries. "Journey to the West" is not only an integral part of China's rich cultural heritage but also a testament to its profound storytelling tradition. This epic journey follows three companions—Monkey King Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie (also known as Pigsy), and Sha Wujing (also called Sandy)—as they accompany their master, Tang Sanzang, on a perilous quest from China to India in search of Buddhist scriptures.

The Origin Story

Tang Sanzang, also known as Monk Tang or Tripitaka, was a devout Buddhist monk who lived during the Tang Dynasty. He decided to embark on a journey westward with his three disciples in search of sacred scriptures at Mount Sumeru—the highest mountain in India where Buddhism originated. Their mission was not only important for spreading Buddhism but also aimed at retrieving knowledge that could bring peace and enlightenment to humanity.

The Journey Begins

With great fanfare and blessings from fellow monks, Tang Sanzang set off on his journey accompanied by his loyal disciples. Monkey King Sun Wukong was initially an unruly spirit who lived under Five Elements Mountain before becoming the powerful protector he later became. Zhu Bajie was once an evil pig demon who joined forces with another demon king against heaven itself; however, after being defeated by Monkey King Sun Wukong he vowed allegiance towards Monk Tang along with Sha Wujing—a barbarian living in Li Shan Mountain.

The 18 Trials

As they ventured through treacherous landscapes filled with demons and mythical creatures alike, this group encountered numerous challenges along their path toward Mount Sumeru. These trials were designed by various celestial beings testing both physical strength as well as moral character among these travelers.
